- In the debate over CBDCs, stablecoins and tokenized deposits, Swift’s conference in Miami sent a clear signal: the bottleneck is interoperability
- Central bank digital currency timelines remain without a date.
Sibos 2026 takes place in Miami Beach from September 28 to October 1 under the theme “Digital Finance for AI-driven Economies.” The second day focused on CBDC operational timelines and the role of stablecoins in cross-border payments, with AI applied to fraud prevention as a backdrop. What did not emerge, at least from the coverage, were specific dates or commitments from central banks.
How do they connect?
The conference’s own agenda frames the issue: deposits, stablecoins and CBDCs are gaining momentum, but fragmentation across models and infrastructures limits interoperability and scale. Quant, which is participating in panels at the event, argues that the three forms of tokenized money, including CBDCs and synthetic CBDCs, will coexist. This is an infrastructure provider’s position, but it aligns with the broader framing of the agenda: the debate is no longer about competition between formats.
The push for standards
The Standards Forum session, featuring Holger Neuhaus (ECB) and Charifta El Otmani (SWIFT), sums up this logic. It argues that compatibility with ISO 20022 and standardized definitions of tokens and their life cycles are essential for programmability and interoperability across platforms. Standards are the natural bridge between this infrastructure and programmable money.
Timelines: the outstanding issue
If Sibos did not provide timelines, the digital euro case shows what they depend on. The ECB pilot is expected to begin in the second half of 2027, and EU legislation is still pending. In other words, the timeline depends more on the legal framework than on the technology, and the same applies to any project announced in Miami.
Stablecoins: regulation before scale
Experts stressed that stablecoins need regulatory frameworks that ensure stability and security before becoming a central component of cross-border payments. That demand connects with the regulatory debate across the region, where progress remains uneven.
